Tail 45

Tail Fly Fishing Magazine #45 just showed up on my doorstep–pay no attention to the poodle on my lap in the background–and should be in the retail outlets shortly (if you don’t already have a subscription).

We’ve done some neat things with this issue (Joe’s bored high schooler textbook doodles being only one of them). Carl Harris has given us our most cutting-edge fly tying feature to date (the Soft Chew Wiggler 2.0; check out the tying template printed on the back of our subscription cards). TFFM historian Ed Mitchell reimagines A.W. Dimock, the first angler to seriously pursue tarpon with a fly rod (in the early 1900s, no less). Joe Brennan (@tide_runner), who ordinarily reeks of fish, confesses how the bonefish and giant trevally of Fanning Atoll cleaned his plow. Alan Caolo, whom I have known since I first got involved in the game, writes about the one (bonefish, that is) that didn’t read the book. The guides and staff from Southern Drawl Outfitters prep you for a bucket list redfish trip to the Lowcountry. The So Fly Podcasters of Toronto, Ontario, snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the Yucatan when their rod bag disappears at the airport. Ryan Sparks dodges drug lords’ bullets to catch peacock bass and the payara of a lifetime in coastal Columbia. I contribute a technical piece about distance fly casting, Joe writes about fishing in the snow, and Kelli profiles Houston’s hottest Mexican restaurant, Cuchara. All this, a fly tying Gear Guide, winter cocktail recipes, a box of killer flies, and a painful tattoo of a busting tuna. What more could you ask for in a saltwater fly fishing magazine…?
